Unseasonal Weather – Dynamic Climate Events

 

Unseasonal Weather adds random, season-aware climate events to Project Zomboid’s vanilla weather system. Events trigger automatically during gameplay and respect the current season—spring, summer, autumn, or winter—adding variety without overwhelming chaos.

 

What this mod does

  • Season-based random events: each season includes its own set of climate events like heat waves, blizzards, tropical rains, foggy mornings, and cold fronts.
  • Automatic start and end: events activate on their own, last several in-game hours, then transition smoothly back to normal weather.
  • Soft randomness: event intensity varies slightly each time, ensuring no two storms or heat waves play out identically.
  • Balanced, not apocalyptic: designed for atmosphere and unpredictability, not constant survival threats like permanent flooding or extreme cold.
 

How it works (short version)

  • Once per in-game day (default 0:00–23:00), the mod checks for a chance to trigger a special weather event.
  • If successful, it selects an event from the current season’s pool.
  • Rain, fog, wind, temperature, and clouds are adjusted using Project Zomboid’s built-in ClimateManager.
  • Events last a random duration (e.g., 3–8 in-game hours) before vanilla weather resumes.
 

Sandbox Options
Adjust behavior in the “UnseasonalWeather” sandbox menu:

  • Enabled – toggle the system without uninstalling.
  • Daily Event Chance (%) – likelihood of an event occurring each day.
  • Min Duration (hours) – shortest possible event length.
  • Max Duration (hours) – longest possible event length.
  • Intensity Multiplier – scales rain, temperature shifts, fog density, and other effects.
 

Examples of Events
Spring

  • Light drizzle with mild warming.
  • Foggy mornings with low visibility.
  • Spring storms with stronger rain and wind.
 

Summer

  • Heat waves that raise temperatures.
  • Tropical rains with heavy downpours.
  • Summer storms with strong wind and dense clouds.
 

Autumn

  • Cold fronts with cooler air and wind.
  • Persistent drizzle and overcast skies.
  • Foggy evenings and misty dawns.
 

Winter

  • Snowstorms and heavy snow events.
  • Blizzards with strong wind and fog.
  • Clear but freezing cold days.
 

Rare Global Events

  • SuperFog: extremely dense fog with low visibility, possible in any season.
  • CrystalClearDay: near-zero clouds or fog, bright visibility, available year-round.
 

Debug / Manual Triggers
Use Lua console commands for testing or server use:
— Force a random event for the current season
UW.startEvent()
— End the active event and restore vanilla weather
UW.endEvent()

 

Compatibility & Performance

  • Build: for Project Zomboid Build 42.
  • Mode: works in Singleplayer; compatible with Multiplayer if installed server-side.
  • Performance: minimal impact—checks once every in-game ten minutes via vanilla ClimateManager.
  • Other weather mods: compatible unless another mod continuously overrides ClimateManager values.
 

Known Limitations

  • Sandbox setting changes apply only to future events, not ongoing ones.
  • Very high intensity multipliers or narrow duration ranges may cause odd weather combinations. Reduce values if needed.
